Anuradhapura is a major city located in north central plain of Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of North Central Province, Sri Lanka and the capital of Anuradhapura District. Main Attractions in Anuradhapura - (Atamasthana)
- Atamasthana is a term used to refer to a group of eight sacred places in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, which are believed to be associated with the life of the Buddha and important events in Buddhist history. "Ata" means eight and "masthana" means places in Sinhala language.
- The eight places that are considered as Atamasthanaya are:
- Sri Maha Bodhiya - The sacred Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
- Ruwanwelisaya - An ancient stupa built by King Dutugemunu in honor of Buddha.
- Thuparamaya - One of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa.
- Lovamahapaya - A vast building complex that was built by King Dutugemunu and served as a monastery for Buddhist monks.
- Abhayagiriya - A large Buddhist monastery complex that was built by King Valagamba.
- Jetavanaramaya - An enormous stupa that was built by King Mahasena.
- Mirisaveti Stupa - A stupa that was built by King Dutugemunu after he defeated the South Indian invader Elara.
- Lankaramaya - A stupa that was built by King Valagamba.
- These eight places are considered sacred and are visited by many Buddhist pilgrims and tourists who come to Anuradhapura, which was once the capital of Sri Lanka and an important center of Buddhist culture and learning.
